Jon McLaughlin – Summer Is Over (feat. Sara Bareilles)
Two Questions:
(1) I wonder how many music “executives” it took to make this “song.”
(2) I bet they’ve still never met in person. It sounds like bad frosting on a dry cake.
Best Cut: ?????
Dizzy Gillespie – The Verve & Philips Small Group Sessions
There’s 7 discs here and you can literally get lost in them… it’s like joy. What you hear is exactly what they played, and you should be amazed. If makes me long for my nights at the Lighthouse (and maybe even the Jazz Bakery). Ahhhh.
Best Cut: Money Honey (It’s not really the best but I love it so much…)
When Darkness Falls – Bloodstone
I particularly like the line in “Premonitions” that goes “rorarreaghralkdknnelnosnng. RAoroodh ldlkgjlsjkflks. Roar.” An all Native-American band from New Mexico, WDF proves that I have no concept of what the hell is going on with this type of metal. I guess it’s cool that you’re forced to read the lyrics somewhere and memorize them in order to sing along (maybe that’s the ritual!) but I’m not really into the one singer/one screamer bands. Dynamite playing though, those double bass drums are a poundin’. (If you’re wondering I came up on this… I was looking for Bloodstone and their song “Natural High”)
Best Cut: “Forbidden”
The Little Willies – For the Good Times
This is Norah Jones country band and I found myself going back to it a few times this week, so I must really like. The cover of “For the Good Times” is nowhere near as great as the original but it’s really good. The Willie Nelson cut “Permanently Lonely” sounds just like you’d want it to… like you’re in a bar a couple of tables over from the juke box where it’s draining the tears from you eyes into your beer. Nice.
Best Cut: “Lovesick Blues”
The Killers – Day & Age
I’ve gotten in a world of trouble with some friends because there was a time in the med-2000s when a bunch of groups came out and I got their names mixed up. They sounded completely different. I just didn’t know which one played which songs. So when I would tell people I didn’t like The Killers much I actually meant Franz Ferdinand (which would then piss off my friends that like FF – Las Vegas vs Scotland and all that) aye yi yi! I came across DAY AND AGE while looking for a song to use with The Daily Soundtrack… and then I realized I really liked this album. As a side note, turned out there’s a third band I’ve been telling people I like… it turned out I was the only one… and I don’t really like them much… names.
Best Cut: “The World We Live In”
