The House That Jack Built – Jesca Hoop
As you are most likely aware I love me some quirky female singer/ songwriter/ artist/ weirdo music. I’ve always thought it had more to do with me enjoying hearing the female perspective in a male dominated world (of music) than it did with me being a pervy creeper lurker boner guy (although I wouldn’t put that past me. Anyway, I find Jesca Hoop’s music strangely refreshing and unnerving. Most of the time I have little idea what’s going on in her songs but I listen attentively. She’s an acquired taste… and not in a pervy creeper lurker boner euphemistic kind of way.
Best Song: “When I’m Asleep”
Setlist: The Best of Elvis Presley 1950′s (Live) – Elvis Presley
This release is so bad it make me think Colonel Tom Parker is still alive and feeding off the bones of the King. The only people who will buy this and not feel ripped off are people who were missing a recording of E burping… it’s here burp lovers! On Blue Suede Shoes! Buy anything before this.
Best Cut: “Baby Let’s Play House” – recorded in a tin can by somebody’s brother
The Duke – Joe Jackson
First off I dig Joe Jackson… one of the best shows I’ve been to in the past 10 years was Joe and his original trio blowing the doors off some theater in Hollyweird (which one was it Jim?) The Duke must have been an incredibly fun project for JJ… it sounds as if he programmed (maybe even played) every second of the music himself. But this release ain’t doing it for me… check out Money Jungle – Duke with Charles Mingus and Max Roach… that’ll do it for you.
Best Cut: “The Mooche / Black & Tan Fantasy”
Rooster Rag – Little Feat
A really solid release from the Feats (with new drummer Gabe Ford). I have a few of the same complaints I’ve been voicing since they reconstituted in the late ‘80s… a little too mid-tempo at times, I wish they’d snap that back beat a little harder in the mix, a little more ambient air moving between the instruments but it’s minor fluff. The production here sounds like sterling silver, the playing is supernaturally great and the high points far out number the lows.
Best Cut: “One Breath at a Time”
The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends – The Flaming Lips
Thanks to a couple of really cool dudes (you know who you are) I got a copy of this on Vinyl on Record Store Day. It freaked me the f*ck out that day and after listening to it digitally I must change that to “it TOTALLY freaks me the f*ck out.” A friend recently said, “Oh, they don’t take acid or anything.” Uh Huh. If they’re not taking it they’re promoting it. Or whatever hallucinogen it popular that doesn’t make you eat face.
Dark Room + Head Phones + TFLaHF = “The stars taste of diamonds.”
Best Cut: “I’m Working at NASA on Acid”
That’s 5ive Quick Hits!
