For many of you today is Star Wars day and I think it’s pretty cool that people love something so much (although there were great movies before SW… just saying). But today is significant for many reasons…
The Freedom Riders – Harold Jackson & the Jackson Brothers
The Freedom Riders begin their bus trip through the south in 1961. They are much better and stronger people than I’ll ever be. Change was coming. It still is.
Student Demonstration Time – The Beach Boys
In 1970 four unarmed students were gunned down by National Guardsmen at Kent State University in Ohio. The guard immediately said they were provoked by sniper fire. Now it appears the FBI may have paid one of their ‘informants’ to fire shots into the air to give the guard cause to ‘break up’ the protests. Each time you believe the madness of the Viet Nam war is over… it grows. At least J Edgar Hoover is rotting in hell. Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert – Pink Floyd
It turns out that when Dorothy’s house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East it didn’t kill her, it merely stunned her! Later she moved to England and in 1979 became their first female prime minister under the name Margaret Thatcher.
Al Capone – Prince Buster
Al Capone began serving an 11 year prison term on this day in 1932. He was in Alabama but later they gave him a room with a view in San Francisco California. The feds got him for Tax Evasion. Nature got him with syphilis. He’d had it since he was young. No wonder he was crazy.
Panama – Harry Connick, Jr.
The U.S. began construction on the Panama Canal in 1904. Panama had become a country six months earlier with the help of American Ships and money. The U.S. gave it back in 1999.
So there’s more to today than you might have thought considering you can’t blow your nose without hearing “May the Fourth be With You.” Back on Monday Peepoles!
